How to Design a Ported Subwoofer Box : 8 Steps

Thank you very much for your input, I am going to be building a couple of subs, they are the Q-power deluxe, 2200 max 1100 rms dvc. I am going to try and use with my 3 ohm 1000 watt home theater system. Lol if you have any information I should have, please feel free to contact me.

Using an amplifier with adequate power wattage for higher performance is also beneficial. The enclosure requires additional power than that of a ported box. These subwoofers are mainly constructed to produce a deep bass using your car stereo. The woofers are either placed against the rear seat in a car trunk or on a board on a rear deck. Another enclosure that is best for a subwoofer is plywood.

The Enclosure

This is what it implies, in essence, to shed more light on it. Speakers that do not possess a well-good patio do not or cannot produce an excellent bass. The sound that comes out from the back of the speaker tends to eliminate the medium-frequency signals that come from the front. Car subwoofers can cover all demands on deep bass reproduction when fitted into a suitable enclosure. At 8 inches, these small subwoofers are constructed from durable polypropylene and rubber, so they’re long-lasting and resistant to damage. They can handle high temperatures, too, perfect for long drives.

Your camera will be clicking the your eyes will be popping out at what you see and hear, absolutely amazing. When it comes to power, again there is no shortage of high quality power amps out there, particularly from pro-manufacturers like Crown, Crest, QSC, et al. For plate amps, we give a nod to SpeakerPower, who is the OEM supplier for Reaction Audio, Power Sound Audio, and JTR among others.

How Much Time is Needed to Make a Subwoofer Box Design?

The ported box designs are usually suitable for a subwoofer box design for 12-inch subwoofers. However, these boxes require much larger space than the sealed box design. Each subwoofer has a recommended size box that it performs best in, and this differs if mounting in a sealed or ported box. For this guide, I chose to work with a Sundown Audio Ev3 10’, and to find what size box it would work best in, I checked the specs of the speaker, found on the Sundown website.

Manufacturers frequently recommend a variety of box volumes. With a box that is anywhere within the specified range, you can achieve good results. Generally, a wire gauge of 12 to 16 should be used for a subwoofer, depending on the power.

15-Inch Subwoofer Patio

It can give quality beats when music is being listened to. This type of subwoofer is made available in both 10 and 12 inches. The subwoofer has an excellent design and is also reliable.

All these parameters are what makes your sub perform differently than others and allows us to calculate what the box should be like. Go back to your spec sheet for your subwoofer and start entering in the values. A tip for when entering in all these values is to utilize the tab key when moving to the next parameter. WinISD can auto calculate some of these and will help you save some time.

You can buy cylindrical ports online, or you could use a piece of PVC pipe cut to length. Referring to my subwoofer spec sheet, I see that the recommended port area given is 26 square inches, so I should shoot for this value. To find the port area, multiply the Cross area and the Vent length given after plugging in a vent diameter.

If you’re living in an apartment where high SPL is a surefire way to get an eviction notice, a 10” - 12” driver might be more appropriate. With the best free subwoofer box design software, you can create your subwoofer or speaker with minimal effort and without spending much money. If you have already tried doing it, you know that exhausting calculations require a lot of your time. We can say with confidence that if you follow our guide step by step, it is very easy for you to build a subwoofer box on your own in no time.

Most subwoofer manufacturers have the specs for their speakers right on their websites, but some could be in the manuals. You must have the specs of your speaker for future steps. For the Ev3 10”, the recommended air space for a ported enclosure is 1.75 cubic feet. Also, the manufacturer states that this subwoofer is not recommended for a sealed enclosure. For your own project, you will only need the recommended airspace for which type of enclosure you plan to build.

2 inches should be added to the depth of your subwoofer. This engineered wood is extremely robust and dense, which improves audio quality. One of the advantages of this type of subwoofer is that it comes with a modern design. However, this type of subwoofer is not portable and cannot be connected with another subwoofer. It amazes me that you can place it far from other powered speakers.

If sealed, the plywood is lighter than the MDF but strong enough to form the best sound quality. This slanted closure goes in your coupe or hatchback vehicle. After you save your driver, click on the create new project button, find, and select your subwoofer. After the window loads, the first option to change is the number of drivers.

To ensure no undesired air leaks, I use small 1/2′′ screws and silicone from the inside. After you’ve determined the right interior dimensions, remove the 1-1/2″ you deducted in step 5 to get the accurate measurement values for the outer part of the enclosure. Once you’ve double-checked that these measurements will adjust and fit easily in your vehicle, you can now start building. If you intend to install a grille, make sure to account for any extra room that you might need.

Step 5: Optimizing Your Box

Stock audio systems can really lack in lower range bass and adding a custom subwoofer can really help in bringing those low notes to life. While there are tons of prefabricated boxes on the market, building a custom box for your subwoofer is a great way to make sure your subwoofer is performing at its best. The box’s external dimensions were determined using the techniques outlined above. Deduct the width and strength of the Plywood used to make the subwoofer box and get the internal volume. If you’re using 3/4″ MDF, deduct 2 x 3/4″, or 1-1/2″, from each dimension.
