Sample courses for these non-degree programs include AI for Computer Games, Audio Processing for Entertainment Computing, and Game Engine Construction. Programs for aspiring game designers include BFA degrees in Game Design and Interactive Arts with Concentrations in Game Arts Studio or Interactive Arts Studio. A charter member of the Higher Education Video Game Alliance, the Game Design and Development Concentration prepares students to design and develop software programs that use digital imagery and physics to create games, simulations or other applications. The school says, these programs can improve healthcare delivery, transform education, strengthen national security, shape public policy and continue to create social networks. Launched in 2017, the MS DPA is offered within the Division of Visual Computing in the School of Computing.

Students can also major in another subject and minor in interactive media and game development. Worcester Polytechnic Institute was one of the first colleges in the country to offer a gaming program. One of the great things about this video game designer program is that students can enroll in the BS/MS option which allows students to take courses as a step toward both degrees simultaneously and complete this top game design program in five years. Georgia Institute of Technology (GeorgiaTech) offers programs for game designers in several colleges and schools. In addition to the opportunity to select courses across departments, design students have access to the GVU Center Game Studio at GeorgiaTech, the Institute for People and Technology (IPaT), and international campuses in the world’s largest games industry—China.

The data is primarily sourced from government databases such as IPEDS – see sources section for more details. Here’s a quick preview of the first ten graphic design institutions that made our list. The School of Art and Design will offer a new program, illustration, in the fall. The Game Art and Design programs received Plan Approval from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The School of Media, Culture, and Design at Woodbury offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts Game Art and Design program. Carnegie Mellon University has long been known as one of America's leading schools in many disciplines.

University Center for Technology and Digital Art (U-TAD)

The New School offers a BFA in Design and Technology where students have the opportunity to concentrate in either Game Design or Creative Technology. The program is part of the School of Art, Media, and Technology and is very design focused, as opposed to technical heavy programs at some of the other schools on the list. New York City is home to a thriving video game development community, and The New School is the host school for the Northeast chapter of the Independent Game Developers Association. Additionally, students must take art courses in drawing, modeling, and animation. Requirements for this video game designer degree include receiving at least a B in high school precalculus.

Champlain College is home to The Game Studio, which consists of six collaborative majors with courses taught by game industry experts. Studio highlights include small class sizes, interdisciplinary, career-focused curriculums, and collaboration in a studio setting that mirrors today’s professional studio environments. Game Studio Majors include Game Art, Game Design, Game Programming, Game Production Management, Game Business & Publishing, and Game Sound Design. All majors lead to a BS and a Game Programming Minor consisting of 18 credit hours is also available. The Computer Game Science BS (CGS BS)explores games (game engines, games and society, multiplayer games, and game design), computer science (graphics, artificial intelligence, programming, and data structures), and math (linear algebra, statistics, and logic). Students in this program have the opportunity to specialize in just about any area through thirty required elective credits.

Students in the BS programs work with faculty and graduate students on research; collaborate with industry partners; tackle complex design and implementation projects in capstone courses; and tailor their degree to meet their interests and goals. Course highlights include Advanced Digital Design, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Animation, Computer Graphics, Data Visualization, and Digital Sound. Graduates of the games programs at SMU will be prepared to seek positions in the game-based learning sector, multimedia and design, the video game design industry, in visual effects, and more. The curriculum for the undergraduate programs includes a semester-long Gaming Capstone, where students will create a full-blown gaming system.

The School of Art, Media, and Technology (AMT) at The New School Parsons (Parsons) houses a Design and Technology (DT) Program with options leading to a BFA or MFA in DT. Established in 2018, UW Reality Lab houses ongoing programs including The Reality Studio and The Reality Lab, courses, lectures, and the idea incubator. Course options across Viz Lab degree programs include Principles of Design, 2D and 3D Visualization Techniques, Visual Studies Studio, and Computing for Visualization. The 16 credit hour Game Development Minor consists of courses such as Computer Graphics, Programming, Communication and Video Games, HCI, and Interactive Virtual Environments. University of California-Irvine is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).

Students in the program will also gain practical and technical experiential training via Northeastern’s co-op program. The BFA in Game Art and Animation culminates in a two-semester Senior Capstone. Students may also earn a BS CGT/MS Technology with a Specialization in CGT, which may be completed in just five years instead of six or more years if pursued separately. Graduates of the game design programs at Purdue Polytechnic Institute have gone on to work for EA Games, Riot Games, Volition, Zynga, and many others. Two additional programs—the BFA in Art, Media, and Technology, offered at Parsons Paris (est. 1921), and the BFA in Design and Technology (New York campus)—offer opportunities to learn game design.

Depending on the program, EAE graduates will be prepared to pursue positions in game art, design, development or engineering, simulation or edutainment, business (games), and visualization, among others. NYU Tisch Game Center programs include BFA and MFA degrees in Game Design, and Minor in Games. The minor consists of 18 credit hours of study and it explores foundation game studies and other areas through elective coursework.

This sequence is modeled after real-world commercial game design company project workflow. Familiarizing students in this process prepares them to enter into a familiar experience when employed at game design companies. The Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy at the University of Central Florida offers an immersive, interactive and project-based game design program leading to a Master of Science in Interactive Entertainment.
